What Is Botox?

Wrinkles, crows feet, and eyebrow lines are the result of years and years of facial expressions creating permanent lines on our skin. Botox®, a protein derivative from the botulism toxin, is injected under the skin to minimize or smooth out lines and wrinkles on a person's face. Low doses of Botox used over time will eventually paralyze the facial muscles, providing a very smooth facial appearance.

Why Would I Want Botox?

Botox is used to remove and soften wrinkles from the face. When a doctor or nurse injects Botox injected into your forehead muscles, the Botox (over time) will prohibit the nerve impulses from firing. The result: your forehead muscles will be paralyzed, effectively blocking them from working - you won't be able to frown like you once used to! After a time, your forehead wrinkles will eventually disappear altogether. Botox will also help remove and or soften crows feet and the above mentioned forehead lines that are caused by years of frowning. Basically, anywhere you have wrinkles from extended use of the underlying muscles, Botox can help alleviate the wrinkles.

Facial expressions are unavoidable; we all make them, and some of us are more expressive than others. Unfortuneately, the more we use those facial muscles, the more liekly we are to develop wrinkles in those locations over time. Botox counteracts that wrinkling. Of course, you'll lose some ability to create facial expressions, but the benefit will be a smooth, wrinkle-free face. How Often Do I Need To Get Injections?

The general rule of thumb for how long Botox injections will last is about three months. So, your injections will be spaced at approximately 3 month intervals. Of course, there are many factors that come into play, such as: how much Botox was used per injection? Did the person administering the Botox properly inject it into the muscles? How big are your facial muscles?

For a more definitive answer to this question, you'll need to speak with a Botox professional, preferrably a qualified plastic surgeon or a member of his or her staff.

Does It Hurt To Get The Injection?

The more experienced the person is at injecting Botox, the less discomfort you will feel; their skill and technique will determine how pleasant (or unpleasant) your experience will be. Although it's recommended that you always get your injections directly from a licensed MD, sometimes nurses are much better at administering Botox injections.

Who Is Licensed To Give The Injection?

Licensed physicians and nurses can administer Botox (depending upon the state you live in). Before you sign up for an injection, you should make sure the person who will inject Botox into your skin is a specialist in aesthetic medicine, or at least has direct access to such a person within their office. Although extremely rare, there can be adverse reactions to the injection or the Botox itself, and its recommended that an MD be within close proximity if a negative reaction occurs.
